A good pair of sunglasses are the perfect accessory to the ultimate outfit, especially during the summer months. But on National Sunglasses Day on June 27, The Vision Council Foundation aims to raise awareness that sunglasses serve a greater purpose than matching that summer dress or t-shirt.
While many realize the importance of wearing sunscreen to protect skin from the sun’s harmful rays, some ignore the impact on the eyes. Sunglasses are the most effective tool for preventing immediate and long-term UV eye damage. Just one day outdoors without UV-protective eyewear could lead to swollen eyes, blurred vision and sensitivity to light. If the sun is strong enough, reflective rays could even burn the cornea.
Here are a few facts to remember about wearing sunglasses, courtesy of The Vision Council.
🌥 Wear them all year long — Wear sunglasses outdoors regardless of the weather or season. UV exposure can penetrate through clouds on an overcast or even snowy day.
🕶 Get the right pair — Sure, they have to look good, but it’s important to also select sunglasses that effectively do their job.
- Effective sunglasses should offer 100 percent UVA and UVB protection.
- Look for frames made from lightweight materials to provide durability without adding extra weight.
- Choose the appropriate lens for the activities you enjoy. Some shades are designed specifically for activities like cycling, running, golf, sports or even lounging by the water.
😎 Consult a professional — If you’re unsure about which pair to choose, consult a professional. Optometrists and sunglass professionals can help you find the sunglasses perfect for your needs.
👦🏻 Don’t forget children — Children and adolescents are especially vulnerable to UV eye damage, due to their eye structure. They also receive three times as much sun exposure compared to adults, due to their outdoor activities.
